Thursday, April 30, 2026

Class Overview

What will we do?

This is the second class of two that will focus on the fundamentals of robotic process automation (RPA) and its application in accounting and finance. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is a technology that allows for the automation of repetitive, rule-based tasks through software robots or 'bots'. In this class, we will explore how RPA can be used to streamline processes, reduce errors, and enhance efficiency in accounting and finance functions. We will cover the basics of RPA, including how to identify suitable processes for automation, design and build bots using UIPath, and best practices for implementing RPA solutions. The class will include a hands-on lab where students will have the opportunity to build a simple RPA bot to automate a common accounting task.

Materials and Preparation

Class Materials
  • Slides: PowerPoint or PDF
  • Automation Tools: UiPath Web Studio (cloud) and/or UiPath Studio (local)
  • Suggested Pre-Class Preparation
    1. There is no formal required preparation for this class, however, students should have started their individual RPA submission in Class 3, and be working towards completion in this class.
    2. The class will include an introduction to the team intelligent automation deliverable, which is a major team project for the course. Teams will be encouraged to start thinking about potential ideas for this project and are encouraged to discuss potential ideas with the instructor as early as possible for feedback on feasibility and expectations.
  • Class Plan
    1. A brief review of RPA concepts will be followed by a discussion of the final project.
    2. The core areas of focus for the final project will be introduced: financial performance, forecasting, budgeting, financial planning and analysis, project evaluation and risk.
    3. The requirements will be clarified with time for Q&A and then I'll do a check in with each team.
    4. The remainder of class will be focused on working on your individual RPA submission, with time to ask questions and get help from the instructor.
    5. The goal is to complete the RPA workflow part of the submission in class. There is a week of time to finalize the submission after class, and I can provide email and/or zoom support if needed.
